A Bridge To Nature's Wonders (Larry Cassis)

Larry Cassis - 08:29am Mar 17, 1997

Since I teach on an island off the coast of Maine I have to cross a suspension bridge twice a day to get to school. This bridge is one (supposedly) that is related to galloping gurtie that collapsed out in WA so the traveling can be an experience during the bouts of downeast weather we often have. Having traveled back & forth over 15 years I've seen many different scenes and enjoyed most from sea mist to fog to sunrise & set. But I just happened to have my (new) digital camera with me and be going home from school when before me Mother Nature presented a wonder that always moves me. I stopped, didn't have much time or light, but positioned myself (without much effort) to catch the rainbow dropping down from the heavens on the other side of the bridge. I placed the bridge off slightly to the left of the shot and had the road (if it were to be straight) go into the reach (ocean). Something(s) I discovered?

Another instance of being at the right place at the right time means nothing unless you know to take advantage of it . It also helps if someone (luck) is looking out for you too? What pleased me?

being able to capture my favorite natural wonder in an image that holds many meanings & metaphors. What disappointed me?

Once again, my camera (DC40) does not capture the quality of a 35 mm and I did not want to have to alter my image. So what one sees is not as spectacular as what was real. (but then is it ever?) What assignment adjustments would I make?

I did feather-fade the edge of the image but otherwise nothing was altered from the original (not even any color correction) What did I learn from Asgn #2?

I have plenty of others to choose from, It is hard to pick just two Hope you enjoy :)

Larry, I'm so glad I went back into the folders from earlier assignments, because otherwise I would have missed your photo. Not only is it wonderful, but I particularly like your comments. They add to my enjoyment of the image and help me get a sense of the artist and teacher who created it.
