Born in Los Angeles, but having nearly fully recovered, Daniel Russell is
the manager of the Knowledge Management Technologies laboratory in Apple's
Advanced Technology Group (ATG). In this capacity, he coordinates the
research efforts of five areas (Intelligent Systems, Spoken Language, User
Experience, Interaction Design, and Information Technology) providing an
amalgamating, integrative direction to the research as a whole. History
will show if amalgamating integration
is desirable.
Earlier at Apple, he managed the User Experience Research group and was a
member of the Intelligent Systems program.
Prior to joining Apple in 1993, Dan was a Member of the Research Staff at
the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the User Interface Research
group studying uses of information visualization techniques.
In addition to his day job, Dan is an adjunct lecturer on the Engineering
and Computer Science faculty of the University of Santa Clara, and teaches
special topics classes in Artificial Intelligence at Stanford University.
Dr. Russell received his B.S. in Information and Computer Science from U.C.
Irvine, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the
University of Rochester. While at Rochester, he specialized in Artificial
Intelligence, but was inexorably drawn to natural
intelligence as well, pursuing research in the neuropsychology of laterality, cognitive models of
apraxia
and aphasia, coordinated motor movements and
computer vision.
When not delving into the arcane and eldritch mysteries of management
within Apple, or pursing his own
research agenda, Dan can be found running trails of the Santa Cruz mountains, bicycling the roads of same,
or practicing the piano. He has been known to run
marathons and compose music, but usually not at the same time.
